Cheese Superheroes

Melted, shredded, sliced or diced, cheese is a staple in many households. And while it might not be delivered to your home from men or women in capes, masks or bat mobiles, there are “cheese heroes” among us. Dairy farmers across Illinois – and the U.S. – play a big role in getting that ooey-gooey-oh-so-cheesy cheese on our tables. Without the help of super powers, dairy farmers check, feed and milk their cows 2-3 times a day 365 days a year to get milk from the farm to the processing plants to your tables. Much like being a superhero, dairy farming is an endless job, but ask any dairy farmer and they’ll likely say, “It’s all worth it.”

Check out these other dairy digits about your local Illinois dairy farmers:

  • 2,340 – gallons of milk produced by a cow in a typical year
  • 608 – dairy herds in Illinois
  • 24 – plants in Illinois that process dairy products like cheese
  • 10 – pounds of milk to make one pound of cheese
  • 6 – average gallons of milk produced by a cow each day

Go ahead, add that extra cheese and thank a dairy farmer.
