Brent Scholl & Family

About our family

I’ve been married to Kathy, a teacher, for 27 years. We have two children: our daughter, Sam, is at Elmhurst College; and our son, Garrett, is going to the University of Wisconsin-Platteville.

My brother, Bruce, is my farming partner, with his wife, Julie, and their two sons, Matt and Scott.  Matt attends Illinois State University (ISU), and wants to come back to farm – and be the sixth generation.  Scott is still in high school.

My father, Irv, and my mother, LaVerne, also live on the farm.  My dad is 78, and still feeds the cattle every day.

About our food

Our main emphasis is raising about 6,500 hogs every year, wean to finish (we get the pigs at about 15 pounds and raise them to about 275 pounds, when they go to market).  We also raise cattle, and a few sheep. Our crops are corn, soybeans, hay, wheat, and oats, with 1,100 acres farmed.

About our farm

I’ve been farming for over 30 years.  I went to ISU and never intended to come back to the farm. By my junior year, I had changed my mind and rented 200 acres 50/50 with my dad. When my brother graduated from ISU, we rented another 80 acres and started a partnership.

My brother and I are still buying out our dad today, as we have added acres and animals. We look forward to the sixth generation coming back to farm.

The home farm is a centennial farm, and was started by my great-great-grandfather, Conrad Scholl.
